Cattleya Orchids

The Cattleya is what many people see in their minds when they hear the word “orchid”. Various hybrids of this species have traditionally been used in corsages and florist arrangements. The fact that Cattleya orchids come in such a wide variety of colors and shapes makes them a popular selection.

Most Cattleya plants prefer lots of light, but they should not be exposed to direct sunlight in the middle of the day. Their physical structure allows them to store water, so it is important to pot them in a container that allows adequate drainage.

Cattleya require potting every few years. It is not a tricky process, never fear. As far as when it needs to be done, and how to do it properly, all the information is available at the American Orchid Society’s website.
