As orchid lovers we are always alarmed when we hear that the native habitats of our favorite species are lost due to deforestation. But orchids do not live in a vacuum.  Many species, both plant and animal, rely on the inter relatedness within their habitat for their survival. Here is a good story about how that works.

WWF & Eyes on the Forest are using Google Maps Engine to visualize troves of map data and tell stories to the world about the issues facing Sumatra. Tigers, elephants, orangutans and rhinos face diminishing habitat in which to roam, and forests are being cleared at an alarming rate. The short video below explains how this works.
